Player Movement - Request to Play Outside of USA Hockey Birth Year Division

The practice of moving players out of their age division is strongly discouraged by NMICE, LOEAHA, and USA Hockey. All players on the ice have a right to an expectation for fairness and safety. Players will play in the age divisions according to USA Hockey rules.

The player/parent(s)/guardian(s) are encouraged to have a conversation regarding the best placement for the player with the Hockey Director and/or the player's Head Coach BEFORE initiating the Player Movement Process.

While NMICE is not required to allow players to play down/up, a request to make an exception may be considered when submitted according to the Player Movement Process:

NOTE: Print the form prior to clicking on “submit”

  • STEP 2: Player/parent(s)/guardian(s) must acknowledge all risk and liability statements AND sign the form
  • STEP 3: Schedule and attend a player evaluation

NOTE: Evaluator(s) may include the Coach of the upper age division team, the NMICE Head Coach, the NMICE Travel Team Coach Evaluators (if attending a tryout) and/or the Hockey Director

  • STEP 4: Evaluating Coaches must complete the coaching recommendation and sign the form
  • STEP 5: Submit the completed form to the NMICE President NOTE: The form may be scanned and emailed or contact the NMICE President to make delivery arrangements: president@nmice.org

The Pros and Pitfalls of Playing Up

Should My Child Be Playing Up?

USA Hockey Parent Code of Conduct

  • Encourage your child to play by the rules and applaud the good plays of both teams.
  • Do not embarrass your child by yelling at players, coaches or officials.
  • Emphasize skill development and practices.
  • Know and study the rules of the game and support the officials.
  • Applaud a good effort in both victory and defeat.
  • Recognize the importance of volunteer coaches and support them.
  • If you enjoy the game, learn all you can about hockey - and volunteer.

Gear Care:

  • Always open your bag and let gear dry completely after each use.
  • Dry skate blades.
  • Wash undergarments and jerseys frequently.
  • Disinfect your helmet and check fittings regularly.
  • Spray the insides of skates with disinfectant.
  • Wash your entire set of gear monthly or as needed.
  • For jerseys: hang them up, wash inside-out in cold water with mild detergent, and hang to dry to protect logos and numbers.

Hockey Equipment

Players need: skates (fit today with no more than 1/2 inch for growth), HECC approved helmet (chin strap always fastened, do not remove certification stickers), HECC approved facemask, mouthpiece (required 12U and above), neck laceration protection (required for all players 18 and under including goalies), stick (length to chin with skates on), shin pads, supporter and cup, gloves, shoulder pads, pants/breezers, elbow pads, and practice jerseys.
